Overview
2 days Tarangire and Ngorongoro Safari is widely considered one of the most underrated National
Parks on the continent where you will see Big 5 animals, as it is largely overshadowed by the more
famous parks in the area such as Ngorongoro and Serengeti.
Tarangire National Park is almost 3000 sq km in size and is probably best known for its huge
numbers of elephants and baobab trees. The name of the park comes from the Tarangire River
which crosses through the park. Tarangire is especially spectacular during the dry season (June –
November) as wildlife concentrations rival that of the Serengeti (since enormous populations of
elephants and other animals are drawn to the Tarangire River as their only source of water). With its
varied habitats and permanent water in the Tarangire River the park is home to over 2000 elephants
and 500 bird species
Tarangire’s wildlife however is certainly not limited to these giants. The area is rich in migratory
wildlife such as wildebeest, zebra, and buffalo, as well as predators such as lions, leopards and so
much more. It is considered to be home to the greatest concentration of wildlife outside of the
Serengeti ecosystem.
Its swamps are home to over 500 bird species, which is the most in one habitat anywhere in the
world. Amongst those are the Kori bustard (the world’s heaviest flying bird) and the
stocking-thighed ostrich (the world’s largest bird).
Ngorongoro Crater Definitely one of Tanzania’s must-see places – the landscape of
this 829,200-hectare UNESCO World Heritage Site ranges from short-grass plains, grazed
by dazzles of zebra and large herds of wildebeest, to placid crater lakes and volcanic peaks
wreathed in cloud. The famous Ngorongoro Crater is one of the new Seven Natural Wonders of
Africa and the feature from which the Ngorongoro Conservation Area takes its name, The world’s
largest inactive and empty volcanic caldera, formed 2 to 3 million years ago. Around 25,000 large
animals live in the 30,000-hectare crater, including lions, black rhino,s and elephant
